Introduction
The London Green Infrastructure Framework (LGIF) is a new approach to strategic planning of green infrastructure (GI). It will use spatial data to create an evidence base that can be used to plan GI strategically and prioritise GI investment and delivery across London.
In autumn 2024, CAG, working with LUC, were commissioned by the GLA to design and deliver a series of in-person stakeholder workshops to inform the design and development of the LGIF. The objectives of these workshops were to:
- Understand how different stakeholders currently use spatial tools in relation to GI and the gaps and deficiencies in these.
- Explore how different stakeholders might use the completed LGIF interactive map and framework.
- Scope out the most appropriate data available for inclusion in the LGIF.
- Investigate what types of analysis stakeholders would like the LGIF to be able to do.
Our approach
CAG designed and ran three half day, highly interactive workshops. Each workshop comprised a mixture of presentation, plenary input via Slido, and facilitated breakout-groups. The format involved mixing participants up so that some sessions grouped people by role, to enable in-depth discussions about particular applications, with other sessions involving a mix of participants to enable different perspectives to be shared.
Outcomes
80 participants in total attended across the three workshops, including representatives from most of the London boroughs, London wide bodies including Transport for London and London National Park City , national statutory bodies including the Environment Agency, Natural England, Network Rail and the Forestry Commission; universities; charities and private sector consultants. and landscape architects.
Participant feedback was very positive – 95% of participants felt they could contribute well to the sessions. “It was really brilliantly organised and facilitated. It was a great opportunity to share ideas, take a step back and look at the bigger London-wide picture.” (Local authority participant)
“CAG were very responsive and flexible in their delivery, accommodating our request to deliver the final report more quickly than initially planned. CAG persuaded us to keep a tight focus for the events, with just a few key questions, and I think this was an important factor in the success of the workshops.” Emma Edgell, Senior Policy & Programmes Officer, GLA
